History of Jagannath Temple and Wooden Idol
The earliest evidence of this temple is found in the Vanparva of Mahabharata. According to which one day Lord Jagannath appeared in the dream of Indradyumna, the stunning king of Malwa. In a dream Lord Jagannath told Indradyumna that "There is an idol of me in a cave in the Nilachal mountain, which is called Nilamadhav. You should build a temple and install this idol of mine in it. The next day the king sent his close one." The friend sent Brahmin Vidyapati along with soldiers to bring the idol to Nilachal mountain.
Vidyapati had heard that the people of the Sabar dynasty worshiped Nilamadhav and hid this idol of their deity in the cave of Nilachal Parvat. He also knew that Vishwavasu, the head of the Sabar dynasty, was a worshiper of Nilamadhava, who hid the idol in the cave and did not hand over the idol to the king easily.
Chatur Vidyapati was married to the chief's daughter. And finally he reaches the cave with the help of his wife and steals the idol and hands it to King Indradyumna. When Vishwavasu learns that the idol of his beloved deity has been stolen, he is deeply saddened. Seeing his devotee unhappy, the Lord also became sad and returned to the cave in the form of an idol, but at the same time promised King Indradyumna that he would come back to him if he built a huge temple one day. Him.
After some years, the king built a huge temple of Lord Jagannath and asked the Lord to sit in the temple. God said that you bring a big piece of tree floating in the sea to make my idol, which is coming from Dwarka to Puri after swimming in the sea. The king's servants also got a piece of that tree, but together they could not lift that tree. Then the king understood that in this problem the help of Vishwavasu, the head of the Kripan dynasty, an exclusive devotee of Nilamadhav, would have to be taken. Everyone was stunned when Vishwavasu alone took the heavy wood and brought it to the temple.
After this it was the turn to make the idol of God out of wood. But even after lakhs of efforts of all the artisans of the city, no one got the girl. After this Lord Vishwakarma appeared in the guise of an old craftsman and appeared in front of the king and said that he can make an idol, but he has a condition that he will do the work of making the idol for 21 days. No one should be near him while making the idol. The king also accepted this condition. After this, the sounds of saws, chisels, and hammers kept coming to the people from the closed room. Meanwhile, the king's wife Gundicha also reached near the closed room but Gundicha did not hear any sound. Gundicha was afraid whether the artisan was dead or not. The queen narrated this story to the king. There was no sound coming from inside, so the king felt the same way. Ignoring all the conditions and warnings, the king ordered the door of the room to be opened.

When the door of the room was opened, no one was there. 3 unfinished idols were found from there, Lord Nilamadhav and his brother had small hands, but their legs were not formed, while Subhadra's hands and feet were not formed at all. The king understood that the old man would never come again. The king accepted the wish of God and installed these unfinished idols. Since then till today all the three brothers and sisters are sitting in this form in Jagannath temple.
