ccording to Ishan Samhita, on the Chaturdashi day of the Falgun month, Bholenath appeared in the form of the divine Jyotirlinga (shiva linga). The Mahashivratri festival is celebrated annually in the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha of the month of Magha.

History of mahashivratri


According to Hindu Puranas, Shivaratri is the union of two supernatural beings, Shiva and Goddess Shakti in the universe. Shiva is considered the god of death, and the goddess Shakti is regarded as Shakti.


According to Hindu Puranas, several myths and legends explain the origin of the Shivaratri festival. According to the popular legend, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were married on this day.


 

Mother Parvati, after 14000 years of deep repentance, begged Lord Mahakal for marriage. Shiva gave the incarnation of Shakti to Goddess Parvati. Impressed by her devotion, he agreed to marry her.


On the eve of Amavasya, the goddess fasted for her good health after marriage. Even today, this practice is followed by every Indian woman who prays for the life of her husband.


That is why Mahashivratri is also celebrated as the date of marriage of Shiva-Parvati. It is told in the Ishan Samhita text that Falgun appeared in the form of Lord Shiva Linga in the middle of the night on the Chaturdashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha.


For the first time, Shiva Linga was worshiped by Lord Vishnu and Brahma. Hence Mahashivratri festival is celebrated as the manifestation day of Lord Shiva and worship of Shivalinga.


Story behind Mahashivratri

It is said that Parvati did penance for 14,000 years to marry Shiva, afterward Mahadev was very happy to see Parvati's severe penance and asked Parvati to seek her blessings. Mata Parvati sought the blessings of marrying Bholenath. Mahadev happily asked mother Parvati for marriage.


But when Shiva arrived in the procession to marry Mother Parvati, everyone ran away in panic. As a result of ghosts, witches and dakinis had Come together with Lord Shiva.


Dakins and magicians decorate Shiva with ashes and make him garland with bones. Parvati's mother and father rejected the marriage as soon as she reached the door of the procession.


Not only this, seeing this form of Lord Shiva, all the gods were additionally surprised. Before the situation worsened, Mata Parvati prayed to Lord Shiva, and he came dressed as per his custom.


Then King Shiva listened to Mother Parvati and sent a proclamation to all the deities that everyone should come dressed in good clothes. Hearing this, all the deities came wearing very nice clothes.


Then the marriage of Maa Parvati and Shiva was completed in front of Brahma. Hence Shivratri is celebrated on this day.


What have to do in mahashivratri



 It is believed that worshiping Lord Shiva on this day fulfills the wishes of all the devotees. It is considered best to worship Mahadev and Mata Parvati on this day at the right time. It is said that by doing this, the grace of Lord Shiva always remains.


1. Fasting should be done on the day of Mahashivratri.


2. Wake up early and put on clean clothes after taking a bath.


3. Go to the temple at the right time and offer water and milk to Mahadev.


4. On the day of Shivratri, make 11 Shivlings of flour and perform Jalabhishek 11 times. With this solution, your chances of having children increase.


5. While serving Mahadev on the day of Mahashivratri, anointing should be done with Bilva leaves, honey, milk, curd, sugar and Gangajal.


6. Om Namah Shivaya should be chanted on the day of Mahashivratri.


7. Anoint the Shivling in mixing black sesame in water and sing the mantra 'OM Namah Shivaya'. This will give peace to the mind.


8. One should not eat grains during fasting on this day.


9. On Shivratri, go to a poor place and feed everyone. With this there will never be a shortage of food in the house and the souls of the ancestors will get peace.


10. Serve jaggery roti in Gaumata.


11. Do not harm any animal.
