Tatya Tope and the liberation struggle of 1857

Tatya Tope was fast and brave, when war broke out in 1857, Tatya, along with 20,000 soldiers, forced the British to leave Kanpur. He assisted the jhansi queen in the battle of Kalpi.

In November 1857, he mobilized a rebel army in Gwalior and tried to conquer Kanpur. But it would not happen. The main reason for this was that Man singh, a former Sardar of Gwalior, met with the English for the greed of Jagir.

As a result Gwalior was once again under British rule. Tatya and Nana Saheb did not lose any battle with the British when they were together.

The British refused to accept Nana Saheb in Bajirao Pesha's successor. Similarly, the British did not consider the adopted son of Rani Laxmibai, queen of Jhansi,  to be the heir to their property.

At the same time, Tatya was very angry with the British decision and decided to help Rani Laxmibai. It is said that Tatya already knows Rani Lakshmibai and that the two were friends.

In 1887, Rani Laxmibai also took part in the British uprising and the British wanted to silence everyone involved in the uprising. In 1887, under Sir Hughes' leadership, British troops invaded jhansi.

At the same time, when Tatya Tope found out about this, she decided to help Rani Laxmibai. Tatya and his army fought against the British army and saved Lakshmibai from British occupation.

After winning this fight, Rani and Tatya Tope went to Kalpi. Wherever he went he also prepared another strategy for his war against the English. Tatya knew that in order to defeat the British, he would have to keep his army strong.

To deal with the British, Tatya joined hands with Maharaja Judge Rao Scindia while developing a new strategy. Thereafter they both simultaneously asserted their authority over the famous tower of Gwalior.

Tatya's move shocked the British and intensified their efforts to capture Tatya. On June 18, 1858, Rani Lakshmibai was defeated in a battle against the British in Gwalior and set himself on fire to escape the British.
